Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

An adult intensive outpatient program, or IOP, is an outpatient psychiatric program that provides treatment in a supportive environment for adults with mental illness. Patients receive medication management, group and periodic individual therapy. An IOP also provides case management, assistance with transitioning after discharge, and a health assessment.

The overall goal in treatment is to keep the patient well integrated in the community while stabilizing symptoms, fostering hope, and increasing their confidence while reducing the chances of rehospitalization. The vehicles of change come with consistent and individually tailored clinical and rehabilitative services in a context that emphasizes the importance of daily and consistent treatment, active participation in groups and treatment planning.

An IOP provides treatment for a wide range of psychiatric illness ranging from schizophrenia, affective disorders, co-morbid substance abuse, and other less severe but nonetheless debilitating illnesses such as anxiety disorders.
